Why Have a Mission Statement?
Everyone hears the buzzwords so often...Our Mission....Our Vision. But what does this really mean and why do companies use them? The answers are really quite simple. A mission statement or a vision statement helps to keep your company on course. It helps you define your purpose and your goal. It tells others who read it what your purpose is and why you do what you do. It can define in clear terms what you are trying to achieve and what service or products you provide. A good mission statement can also impart to others what your values are.
From the owner’s perspective, a clear mission statement is fundamental in defining where the business is going and how it intends to get there. Just as in anything we do, without direction, we can easily get lost, make poor choices, and end up in a totally different place than we want to be. A mission statement or a vision statement can keep us on course and focused.
So, how do we create a clear, concise and focused mission statement? Well, sometimes it is wise to seek the help and guidance of a pharmaceutical consulting group or training program, especially if a mission statement is being prepared for the first time. Here are some basic principles of building a mission statement that should be included if you are considering the implementation of a mission or vision statement for your company.
Don’t hurry. Plan to spend a good amount of time on the process. Sometimes you have to let information sit for a while in order for it to make sense.
Involve as many people as you can in the process. The old saying two heads are better than one, really applies here, and actually the more heads the better. It is the best way to get plenty of perspectives and ideas to draw on for the final product.
Keep an open mind. Not everyone will share the same vision for the business. Everyone has a right to express their feelings.
Try new skills. This is a great time to put into practice those brainstorming skills you’ve acquired.
Make it short. In the end, you want your statement to be short and to the point. The road to short is sometimes long, but it is ultimately where you want to be.
And the final pointer to remember is that a mission statement is not written in stone. It is always prudent in business to review things often to stay on track. This applies to your mission statement as well.
